Characteristics of circular knife blade

No matter what specification or material the circular knife blade is made of, it must bear the force brought to the circular knife blade by the high-speed rotation of the slitting machine when processing the slitting. A good circular knife blade must have strong wear resistance and sharpness to adapt to the friction force with the cut object. At the same time, it must have a certain impact resistance to prevent cracking in contact with the object when rotating at high speed. Therefore, a good circular knife blade should meet the following basic characteristics.


First, the hardness of the circular cutting knife blade should be high. Generally, the better the material, the higher the hardness achieved by quenching. Seeing this, some readers will wonder why some ordinary materials can be quenched to a high hardness? There is a word in China that too much is better than less. If an ordinary material can be quenched to a high hardness, the toughness of the blade will be damaged, and the result is that the blade edge is very easy to crack. Therefore, the quenching hardness of the circular knife blade must depend on the material.


Second, the wear resistance of the blade is better. The wear resistance of the blade is directly proportional to the hardness. The better the material and hardness of the circular cutting knife, the better the wear resistance.


Third, the heat resistance of the blade is better. Heat resistance refers to the hardness, toughness, strength and wears resistance of steel when used at high speed in high temperature environment. The quality of a circular cutting knife is usually measured by the red hardness of steel. The greater the red hardness, the higher the cutting speed that the material can bear.


Fourth, good stability. The stability of the blade refers to the degree to which the crystal of the material of the slitting blade changes during the heat treatment of the blade. At present, the heat treatment methods of slitting machine blades include vacuum quenching, salt bath quenching, electric furnace quenching and so on. Different quenching methods have a very important impact on the stability of blade material.


How can circular knife manufacturers improve the manufacturing process of circular cutting knives?

One is to improve the balance of the stainless steel circular knife blade, which is of great help to improve the safety of the blade. Because the imbalance of the stainless steel circular knife blade will produce an additional radial load on the spindle system, which is directly proportional to the square of the speed.


The second is to improve the clamping mode of the stainless steel circular knife blade. The clamping method of the circular knife blade does not allow the general friction clamping. The blade with the center hole should be used, the screw clamping mode should be adopted, or the specially designed circular knife blade structure should be used to avoid the blade throwing away the knife seat. The clamping force direction of the blade shall be the same as that of the centrifugal force. The preload of the screw shall be controlled to prevent the screw from being damaged in advance due to overload. For small diameter milling cutter with shank, hydraulic chuck or thermal expansion and cold contraction chuck can be used to achieve high precision and high stiffness.


The third is to improve the material of the circular cutting knives. Using titanium alloy as blade material can effectively reduce the fracture of the circular knife blade and improve its speed. However, titanium alloy is not suitable for manufacturing cutter bodies because it does not match the notch. Therefore, some high-speed milling cutters have begun to manufacture cutter bodies with high-strength aluminum alloy.


Fourth, improve the structure of the blade. In the structure of stainless-steel circular knife blade, the stress concentration should be avoided and reduced as far as possible. The groove on the blade will cause stress, which will reduce the strength of the blade. Therefore, the sharp corners at the through groove and groove bottom should be avoided as far as possible.
