High-speed steel (HSS) is a kind of tool steel with high hardness, high wear resistance, and high heat resistance, also known as high-speed tool steel or front steel, commonly known as white steel. High-speed steel was created by F.W. Taylor and M. white in 1898.

High-speed steel has good process performance and a good combination of strength and toughness. Therefore, it is mainly used to manufacture complex thin edge and impact-resistant metal cutting tools, as well as high-temperature bearings and cold extrusion molds. In addition to the high-speed steel produced by the smelting method, powder metallurgy high-speed steel appeared after the 1960s. Its advantage is to avoid the reduction of mechanical properties and heat treatment deformation caused by carbide segregation caused by the smelting method.

Advantages of using high-speed steel

High-speed steel is a kind of alloy steel with complex composition, which contains carbide forming elements such as tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, and cobalt. The total amount of alloy elements is about 10 ~ 25%. It can produce high heat in high-speed cutting, maintain high hardness at about 500 ℃, and HRC can be more than 60. This is the main characteristic of high-speed steel - red hardness. After quenching and low-temperature tempering, carbon tool steel has high hardness at room temperature, but when the temperature is higher than 200 ℃, the hardness decreases sharply. At 500 ℃, the hardness has been reduced to a degree similar to the annealing state, completely losing the ability to cut metal, which limits the use of carbon tool steel in making cutting tools. High-speed steel, due to its good red hardness, makes up for the fatal shortcomings of carbon tool steel and can be used to manufacture cutting tools.

High-speed steel generally does not do tensile strength inspection, but mainly metallographic and hardness inspection. After proper heat treatment, the Rockwell hardness of tungsten and molybdenum high-speed steel can reach more than 63 and that of cobalt high-speed steel is more than 65. The acid impregnated macrostructure of steel shall be free of visible shrinkage and peeling. The center is loose. Generally, the porosity should be less than grade 1. Metallographic examination mainly includes three items: decarburization layer, microstructure, and carbide non-uniformity.
